I have the directions for resetting the TPM system already. My question is how big of a magnet do I need? I've got one that's small but sticks to steel like superglue. Tried it with no horn sounding within 15 seconds. The dealer wants around $60 for the J41760 tool. Surely I can buy a magnet somewhere cheaper. Any ideas?????
Go to a hardware store and get the strongest one you can find. I use one of those magnet on a stick things. A speaker magnet will also work. Some have reported that you can also get magnets that work well at Radio Shack.
I used an extendable magnet like that used to retrieve tools, bolts, nuts etc that you drop in an engine compartment. I placed it on the valve stem, but I'm sure that's not a requirement and it worked just fine.
As others have suggested, an old speaker magnet should surely do the trick, but my experience is that it doesn't require an extremely large magnet.
The strongest ones I've seen are available at your local hardware store and are rated to lift 200 lbs. I bought one of these (for a whopping $15 @ Lowe's) after fruitless attempts with smaller magnets.
Eventually found out that I had to leave the magnet sitting on top of the base of the valve stem motionless for about a second or two before the horn would beep. (Not instantaneous upon placement of the magnet as I had thought).
You don't need a big magnet at all as the key is the placement of the magnet. For example, I use a small pack of ceramic magnets that I picked up at Radio shack for a couple of dollars. In fact, I've never even taken them out of the blister pack.
