Rear end/Diff. leak... Can we set up a Poll for this?
My 2004 C5 started leaking from the diff/ rear end at 6,500 miles. Its fixed now with a new seal but from what I understand it can and will happen again. I would like to set up a poll here so those that have this problem can state their problem and then hopefully if we get enough response we can get GM to address this problem.
My factory 3.15 in my 98 never leaked. Put in a Getrag 3.73 and it was leaking at 5k. Dealer repaired, has not leaked since. I remember it being a spendy fix as well.
My 04 vert was leaking at 11,000 miles replaced seal and new style O-ring. Leaked again at 23,000 miles replaed aboe plus diff cover plate. OK past 1,000 miles. I think that GM should be giving free extended warranty on this item.
Are you guys sure that they aren't leaking thru the vent on the left side? I personally don't think that the factory vent is enough so I put a bigger vent in and haven't had a leak since.
My 2000 automatic coupe with 35,000 miles on it just had the left side rear end leak repaired at a cost of $450. It was not done by a dealer, but by a trusted transmission shop. They said the leak was actually from above the seal and was from the diff cover, but they put on the revised seal and o-ring while they where in there. The right side seal was not leaking at all, so they did not have to drop the rear-end down - that would have been at least $1000.
3 days ago saw a small leak on Left side (2002 - 32,000 mi) Dealer says 90% occur on the Left and doesn't know why.
Will have it repaired before winter....first time to use my extended warranty.
left side leaked at 28,000, fixed it myself for $50.00 total. Took 5 hours but an hour of it was cleaning all the grease from the underside. Repair it your self if you ever done a front wheel drive axle shaft. Not any harder - just a little different. I printed out a how to off of the forum.
