Oil Consumption ring replacement doesn't work
Unfortunately I have a 2001 coupe with A4 auto trans. I went through the oil consumption measurement via my local dealer. 1qt per 800 miles was the result. The dealer performed the defined GM fix of replacing only oil rings. After 5000 miles I am still using @ 1 qt per 1000 miles well over the 1qt/2000 mile threshold defined by GM. Is there anyone out there with a similiar experience? If so please advise me:
1. Why didn't the new oil rings resolve oil consumption?
2. What did you do to resolve the issue with GM?

I had the ring job done @3,300 miles and it absolutely fixed mine. I would think that A4s would be less prone to ring problem in that it is a light load mid rpm ring issue more attributable to M6s.

Something is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the Vette Doctors do my 2001 Z06 for me and all I can say is WOW what a difference. No oil consupmtion issues anymore. If I were you I would go back to that dealer and demand they check out the car again. Sounds like someone pulled a fast one. If they did the ring job properly your car should be FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you say SUCKIE DEALER

I had it done at 12500. and it fixed the problem
Although, since installing the cam, I noticed it was a little low but I think that's because I spend even more time about 3000 RPM
I only put on 3000 miles a year on the car and it's hard to tell

I have a 2001 6-speed coupe and am burning oil at about the same rate as you. I also hava a mild to moderate amount of piston slap but the dealer is using the oil consumption data, and my argueing, to replace the pistons with 2002 spec ones with GM footing the bill. I have to figure out if they will do the rings with that job as well. The ring kit was intended for hight oil consumption problem cars. The new pistons were designed to combat both the high oil consumption and piston slap, which can be related problems. If you had a ring job (and they really did it and didn't just charge you) and you are burning that much oil, something is definately wrong (especially with the automatics that tend to operate at lower rpms). Do you have a lot of piston slap? Maybe you have so much slap that you are still getting a lot of blowby even with the new rings. Cure for this would be new 2002 or newer spec pistons, or possibly a new engine if the bores are out of round when they pull the pistons.

1. Did they really do the job?
2. If so, did they inspect for wear to insure the replacements would correct the problem?
3. Have you had work done their before?
4. Did you look for evidence under the hood that indicates major work had taken place?
