Is there a trick to removing the plug wires? I want to change the plugs, but the wires are a major PIA to remove. Are the alumminum boot covers standard on these cars? I am pretty sure the plugs are original, so this might be why they are seemingly stuck in place. Any advice would be appreciated.

The trick is to rip them the hell off. Trust me, you will probably rip the stock wires just trying to remove them. I would get new wires before attempting this, most folks destroy the old wires takeing them off. The aluminum boots are stock on corvette's but not needed. If you get some good MSD 8.5 Super conductor wires they will work well or I am sure any wire will suffice. Make sure to get some Di-electric grease for the plug boots and put antisieze on the threads of the plugs.
you can buy plug boot pullers or bend a clothes hanger to make a tight loop that fits over the neck of the plug but that is smaller than the diameter of the boot.
then yank on it...
pulling on the wire/boot stretches the rubber and tightens it against the plug.
Pulling on the base of the boot with the hanger tends to compact the boot causing its side walls to bulge and makes it easier to get off...
