Stock Engine Detonation?!?! Help!
I was hoping that you can help me with a problem.
I recently purchased an 01 and noticed that when I really hammer the throttle, somewhere around 4000-4500 rpm, it begins to make strange noises up until the rev-limiter. It really only shows itself in first gear.
Anyway, I'm thinking it may be detonation; however, the noise doesn't really have a "metallic" sound. You may think this is crazy, but it kinda has the sound that leaves make when they are blowing down the street. (??)
Anyway, I'm thinking it's related to detonation, but the motor is stock (or at least I think so, I just bought it) and I only use 93 octane Chevron gas. Also, outside temperature is 65-70 degrees, so I know it's not due to high ambient temps.
Any ideas on what this could be?? I was thinking perhaps a misfire, but I see no check engine light. How severe must a misfire be before a check engine light is flashed?

Also, a top end clean (done prior to the plugs) with seafoam or other similar product works to eliminate carbon deposits that can change the compression ratio and/or create hot-spots leading to detonation.
Finally,is your car burning an excessive amount of oil? If so, the oil vapor that comes through the crank-case vent can also lead to detonation (as well as contributing to the carbon build-up).
A search on pinging or detonation or knocking will provide you details.
