I am having a tie rod replaced on my 01 C5 at a specialty Vette shop. They tell me I will need an alignment, which I am sure I do. They want to charge me $110 for the alignment and can't do it until a week after the tie rod replacement. I could wait and have it all done at once but the logistics of dropping and picking up the car does not allow for it.
Anyway, isn't $110 a little high for an alignment? Is there something unique to a Vette that does not allow a NTB, Goodyear or any other tire shop to perform the same quality of alignment?
As always, thanks for the great feedback I always receive on this board!
There's nothing special about a C5 (other than clearance being a bit tight getting up onto the rack). My shop charges $80 and takes the guy (he's really good!) about 1.5-2 hours to do the work.
What's much more important is you finding a competent alignment specialist. It took me 5 trips to 5 different shops before I found a guy with a lot more talent than ego.
As far as replacing your tie rod end goes, just have them eyeball adjust it, then tell 'em thanks. Then go find a shop that can take care of you today, not in a week.
I do not think that is an unreasonable price for a four wheel alignment on the Vette. I suspect that shop might do a better job than an NTB or other type shop that may not see that many Vettes. I suggest you also do a search on the Forums though as many owners, such as me, have expereineced premature tire wear on the tire inside areas using factory specs. In these posting you might get an idea of alternative alignment specs to use. MTCW
I just got mine done today at Hibdons Tire Plus. $40 out the door. I watched the whole thing and got a print out of the specs before and after the alignment.
