Are there any major differences between early model C5's H20 pumps and late model ones? Reason I ask is...I had my H20 pump blow out on the road and had a new one installed by a Stealership...I bought a lower temp T-Stat to put in it and the damn thing won't fit! It seems that the actual opening for the t-stat is smaller then the t-stat element side supports??? I thought it was the wrong part number for the T-stat so I returned it...I subsequently ordered a 160 Hypertech Stat and it it the same size as the one I returned...could I have a newer style H20 pump on my 97?
Yep, the 2004 water pump has a different t-stat and opening. When I ordered a new one for my year car they sent me an 04, seems to be the replacement now. You will need a different t-stat, I think Vinci and TByrne both sell them. Last I looked they were only about 30 bucks, not too bad, and you can always sell the one you bought here on the forum.

Good Luck!
Dang! Thats what I thought...it also seems that this newer pump has a removable t-stat from the housing and the old style is all one piece (stat and housing with O-Ring)
