Hi guys, I've been a long time admirer of the camaraderie and help I've seen here and decided to jump in.
Wondering if anyone can help with this. I'm in the San Diego, CA. area. I have a 2004 coupe I'd like to put an HUD in. I don't have the know-how to do it myself. I've checked around and even the local Chevy dealers won't touch the job. When I go to Corvette specialty shops they tell me they have no experience with hud installs but if I'll just write them a blank check they'll do the work. I have nightmares about these people trying to charge me 1000 to 2000 dollars plus to do this job. Luckily, because I've done my homework researching hud prices and installs here on the forum and on the net, I know the job doesn't cost nearly that much.
So my questions would be, does anyone know any reputable people in Southern CA. (preferably close to San Diego, but I would travel within a hundred mile radius) who do this kind of work? Are there any other Southern CA. posters who got it done? If so, how much did it cost? I figure I can get all the parts from Fred Beans and the 11 pin connector from Josh, I just need a reasonably fair priced way to get the thing installed.
http://joshker99.home.comcast.net/hudinstall2.htm is the link I've got bookmarked. You can do this yourself. I got the parts from Fred and Josh for the cable, #10 well nuts from Ace (because they're the same diameter as the cone shaped grinder on my dremel and it made perfect holes to attach the projector) Even with also adding the column lock bypass and hurst, it only took me about 4 hours labor. The only thing I would change is you don't need to remove the radio or glove box. Take your time and get a helping hand moving the dash pad out and back in so you don't scratch anything and it's a piece of cake.
I wish I could help you, but I've never even contemplated trying out this job. If you want a spare unexperienced hand, I'd be happy to lend my assistance. You may want to give Top Flight a call, as I've heard lots of good things about them. If you're up for a drive up just north of Los Angeles, then A&A Corvettes is definitely the place you want to go to, and they're a (forum) supporting vendor as well!
