I am interested in installing a performance cam in my 01 auto. I have headers and a 100 shot Nx wet. 3:42 gears and that's about it. Also in the near future I want to upgrade my roller rockers to 1.8's. I would like some recommendations on how big I can go with out doing other mods. Can't really afford to upgrade springs or much else right now and just recently had a dyno and tune so I guess my question is which cam can i run that will give me the most performance without doing the other stuff? I also have heard of the procedure of changing out the cam only using dowel rods?? Have looked for a link on instructions but only found a cam and head procedure on ls1 edit how to?? but not just the cam, any recommendations will be appreciated or if anyone knows of a slightly used cam or set of rollers for sell I may be interested in purchasing them.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
If your looking to change your cam what kind of heads do you have on, are they Stock? If your going to change Cams you really need some heads to go with it. IMHO. But it depends on what kind of horsepower you are looking for. Many of the Forum vendors on the Left side of the screen, have great package deals on both heads and cam. The only one I know, from experience, is Texas Speed and Performance, and they have really competative pricing. But I'm sure any of the vendors would be able to help. Just my 2 cents.
I also would recommend that you do everything when you do the cam (springs, lifters/rocker arm, push rods??). I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but getting your car tuned with just the cam change & then changing things later and getting it tuned again will be more expensive if that's what you're worried about. Also, what you're long range goals for the car are is a big consideration when it comes to cam selection. Another place you can look at is comp. They have quite a bit of info about cams. Check'em out at www.comp.com. Won't be disappointed.
