Just had some after market goodies put on my 02 LS1 by the local Chevy dealership which were; a Breathless Performance Cold air inntake, a Corsa Sport exhaust, and an X-pipe. They have about two or three guys at the dealership who do performance mods. The guy that worked on my car told me the next thing I should do is a computer retune by GM. I asked him if he meant a dyno-tune, and he said no. He further said the retune would get me another 20 or so horsepower. Does this sound right? I asked him if they fit another computer to the car and he said that it was just a re-tune. The cost is $350.00. Is it worth it. Anyone do it to theirs?
Don't do it..If you wan't a real tune have it done by a real tuner with a dyno, wide band O2 and a lap top to data log.. That is the only way to tune. The GM techs are full of BS...
a retune is not required for the mods you have. But a good dyno tune will net you 15-20hp more even on a stock car. If you are planning on doing more mods soon wait and do it later...
No the hand helds are just a generic tune. Not worth it. I would just ask around and find a good local tuner. Our local tuner only charges $300 for a Dyno tune and then $100 for a retune later on when you do more mods... There is usually a good tuner within driving distance. Usually the Camaro guys know where they are...

Add more mods, Headers, Heads, Cam. Then retune on Dyno. Most Tuners give you a serious discount if yu have them install the parts. And installation is probably cheaper than a Stealership. Just my 2 cents.
I had the same mods on my car - vararam, corsas & x-pipe - and had the car dyno-tuned. I picked up 25 hp. The tuner could not get an accurate read for torque. It cost $350.00

A dyno tune netted nothing on my stock car. 357.9
first pull
A dyno tune netted 366.9 with the Halltech stinger
With what you have done, a scan tune might get you a few more ponies and possibly better low and mid range power. A scan tune involves driving the car for 20-30 miles under varied driving conditions. This will give the tuner info on accel/decel/idle and some info on WOT. With the intake you are getting more cooler/dense air into the intake and it will yield more ponies, you want to make PCM is taking best advantage in the low and medium acceleration areas and the X-pipe will do a better job of scavaging the exhaust--worth about 5 hp.
I'd at least wait until you have headers before you do the tuning. As others suggested, go get it dyno tuned...Not only will you be able to get more power (out of the tune), but you will be able to make sure it is safe as well (your A/F, knock, etc)
When I asked him if I should get a dyno-tune, he told told me not at this point, with the mods that I have done.
Actually I think you got a pretty good GM tech there. It is nice having a dealership that will mod your car, seems like it may help if there is a question on warranty. With your limited mods you don't really require a dyno tune but it would not hurt. A scan type tune would also give you a little more HP.
The only thing I don't agree with him on is if you are going to tune it anyway's you might as well go somewhere with a dyno. If he is going to charge you 350 most places only charge 400 for a dyno tune, and usually 100 if you need re tuned.
