Default Shock Replacement, When ??

Is there anyway of knowing or telling when the stock shocks need to be replaced? My 01 has 40,000 miles on it, and lowered on stock bolts about 1/2+, it seems my front air dam is hitting the ground easer under certain circumstances then it use to. Thanks for any input.

Steve

Ok for those recommending the Bilstein shocks, which ones would be good for a stock replacement, heavy duty, or Z51 sport setting, also I read on Ecklers site that they will add a 1/2 " of height and trigger a warning light. I don't want to add any height, is this typical with any shock I install.
Thanks

My opinion for what its worth.....I think the cars settle mostly from the springs over time.

I had new Z06 springs and shocks put in when it was lowered about 20K ago. The front has settled an additional 1/4 inch...now at 25 7/8 inches.

I have also seen OLDER vettes without lowering that look LOW.

shocks do not hold your car up.

shocks DAMPEN the vibration of your springs - they take the rebound out of the spring's oscillations. The springs are the main "supporter" of the car.

The best thing to do ( my $0.02) is get the suspension inspected my a quality shop that does suspension work.

But, yes,if I had to guess based on the limited information you give, I would think a new set of springs ( C5 or Z06) would do wonders for your car AND if the shocks are found to be leaking then have them changed out at the same time. If it turns out that you're going to be replaceing F45 shocks BRING ALOT OF MONEY.

If you think it's starting to scrape too much, adjust the bolts to raise it up a little bit.

put them on a shock dyno or at least pull them and inspect them. They are junk like all OEM shock you will be glad when you get some Bilstiens. I did my Dodge dually and it never ran so good in it's life at 50,000. They felt so good I did my Excursion at 9,000 miles and don't regret that either. Stockers are made to get you off the lot.

Thanks

I replaced my stock Z51 shocks at 45k with Bilstein Sports and saw nothing that Ecklers states? Oh, and I'm lowered on stk bolts.

Got the info for the shocks, so how about a recommondation for the springs....brand/style etc.?
Why would you choose the C5 style over the Z06 ? Or would you buy an after market brand instead of GM ?
Thanks.

Regarding spring choices we've got a thread going on in the Autocrossing & Roadracing forum that might be helpful:
