My coupe has 83,000 miles and I'm thinking about doing a tune up , I'm thinking of a 383 or 402 stroker . Which one is a better ? (besides cid)
I would go with the largest engine your wallet can afford. There is no subtitute for cubic inches. If you drive your car every day as a daily driver and don't race it,you may want to go to the 346 or 383.I have a 346 engine built by A&A Corvette. This engine produces enough horsepower to drive daily to work and has enough power to get me in trouble if I'm not careful. (See my sig below) To answer your question, I don't think the 383 or the 402 are any better than the other. It all boils down to horsepower you want.

I agree you cannot go wrong by getting an engine from A&A Corvette. I love my 346 that I got from him. I went FI and my car could be a daily driver if I wanted it to be. The car is pretty tame until you get into boost and then a whole new awakeing is apparent. Andy builds engines for either NA or FI and he uses the 04 block for the 346. If you were to go with bigger cubes I would go with his LS2 402s.

I may go to the track every now and then , I've had the car 5 years and I race it 3 times. It is a daily driver. Just looking for a little hp (450 -500) .
If you can afford it, go with the 402 (forged LS2 shortblock) and a set of AFR 225 heads, top it off with a 90mm intake and TB. If you can DIY, get the shortblock from Scoggin-Dickey with everything needed to make the LS2 work, get the AFRs from just about anywhere, maybe from LG with the Comp 921 valve spring setup. Looking at about $8-9k in parts, but with the right (but streetable) cam and a good tune, you'd be damn close to 500 rwhp. Talk about runnin' with the big dogs!
My budget is 15k drive out and 500 hp at the rear wheels is where I'm heading..!
15k will pretty much cover eveything you need
Get a complete (oil pump, cam , etc installed) forged 402 shortblock from one of our wonderful vendors (like TSP for example). A set of ET 225 heads. Kooks 1 7/8 headers, Cartek clutch kit. 500whp for sure
For a budget of 15k drive out and 500 hp at the rear wheels. Get the A&A 346 shortblock, use your stock heads, add to it the A&A Vortec supercharger kit and walk away with 650rwhp for under $15K... Peter Pan made 733rwhp with the A&A short block and his ATI supercharger..
A&A forged 347 short block $4K, A&A Vortec $5500, installed and tuned $2500, leaves $3000 left over for clutch, guages, dif brace and misal BS parts...
Or just go for a 402ci LS2 if you think you will remain happy with 500rwhp. Just a warning, you get use to 500rwhp real quick and it starts to feel slow...
My vote goes to the LS7. Why not get one of these?
Long list of reasons. First start with the $13000 price tag(for only 440rwhp). Second, its not a drop in replacement(dry sump motor). Also you have to completely disassemble the motor take the reluctor wheel off the crank and put on a 24 tooth reluctor wheel. And a list of other things to make it work in a C5. There is a forum member doing it right now and its a huge project, not just simply swapping motors...
You should be able to get a 402ci, Stroker with heads and cam, F.A.S.T. 90mm with 90mmLS2 throttle body, install and tune for $10,000, or Less. Ive seen the result of this at Texas Speed and Performance in Lubbock. I got their 383ci forged stroker and wish I'd of paid the few hundred extra for the 402ci Stroker. Great engine. Go this route. You won't have buyers remorse! Good luck and enjoy the power!
The 382/383 is LS1 based; a 402 is LS2 based. The only way a 383 stroker makes sense is if you are tight on $$ (does not seem to be the case here) or if having matching numbers is important (382/383 could be built from your existing block). Of course, in order for matching numbers to have any significance, you'd have to return the motor to stock when you sold the car.
I'd go with a 402. In fact, I did!
