Default Plug wires do indeed wear out

Lately my idle has been sounding a little off and even though there were no codes, I could swear the car was having misfires. So for Christmas my son bought me a set of the new GM Iridium plugs. I shudder to think what he paid for them, but I was very happy to receive them

Today I went out to change out the plugs. I had read that this was quite a chore in itself, but it wasn't bad at all. I took my time and spent about two hours. As it turns out, the factory plugs were still looking good. They all had their pucks still attached and they were all gapped between .55 and .60 as close as I could measure with my cheapy spark plug gapper.

What was worn out were the stock spark plug wires. The car has 38K miles on it and the wires were toasted. Of the 8 I pulled off the car, 4 fell apart in my hands. I literally tore them in two. One other wire came off the plug but left the metal connector still attached to the plug and the remaining three wires came off without issue.

Needless to say I bought a new set of wires, so now I have new wires and plugs. I took the car out for a drive and it runs great. The idle is now smooooth! The moral of the story is that the stock wires and plugs can and do wear out fairly quickly, so do your vette a favor and replace them. It's a cheap and fairly easy mod that will keep your car running the way its suppoed to.
