Default C5 TECH, Can we "Bypass" the recall?

I have the 6 speed and I am not confident about Chevy's fix for column lock. Extra power for the motor   I would love the automatic's fix but I guess that's out of the question for Chevy to install it on my 6 speed.

My question is this. If I install the C5 Solutions bypass and ignore the recall what happens the next time I get service. I am sure it will show up on my computer records. Can I refuse the recall and still get other warranty work done?

I was wondering the same thing. My dealer goes ahead and performs any service bulletin work without even asking. :mad

Good question....When you bring a vehicle in for service, the service advisor may or may not VIS (vehicle inquirey system) the VIN#.This procedure is to check warranty expiration date, selling dealer, service history,etc,etc...When this is done,it will show if there is a recall "open" for the vehichle. If there is a recall open, the advisor will add it to the repair order.

The last paragraph of every recall states;Whenever a vehicle subject to this campain enters your vehicle inventory,or is in your dealership for service, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the campagn correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle :( BUT,recalls are listed in two different catagories,SAFETY or CUSTOMER SATISFACTION...The column lock recall is listed as a CUSTOMER SATISFACTION recall, not a SAFTEY recall (and we all know why that is ;) )

This is a weird circumstance in that I cant every recall (no pun intended) were a customer did not want a recall performend on their vehicle in the past ...
I would simply state to the service advisor that your vehicle has the CLB and that it would not be compatable with their recall. They may ask you to sign the repair order releasing them from any liability due to a future fault related to the column lock.Declining the recall shouldnt have any effect on other warranty work performend.

Remember,we all know that every dealer has their own policies and there is always the possibility that you will come across one that wants to play hardball with you

Other than the economic reasons associated with having paid for the CLB and the concerns about the service departments abilities, is there any reason not to have the recall performed? Once the recall work is completed, does this preclude the option of reinstalling the CLB? If you can trust / find a technician like C-5 Tech or C4C5 Specialist, wouldn't you be better off having the recall work done and then using the CLB if you're still worried?

C5 TECH,

Please clarify this issue for me and Black Rain. The CLB is not compatable with the recall "fix", is that correct?
We either have to trust Chevy's extra power to the lock motor fix or try and decline the recall and go with the
CLB.

Thanks again,

Rick

I wasnt implying that the CLB would not be compatable with a completed recall on the M6...I was suggesting that this may be a good excuse to tell the dealer for those looking to not have the recall performend if they were not comfortable with the procedure,or had allready installed the CLB,should the dealer force the issue...It souldnt be to long before the verdict is out on wether or not the "fix" for the M6 is reliable...

Good thread. I don't plan on taking my C5 in for the fix (I did receive a letter) since I have the CLB. If I do have to take it in for something else (parish the thought) I will probably remove the CLB, let them do the recall repair, and then I'll reinstall the CLB when I get it home. It seems like the Generals fix is still subject to failure while the CLB is not. It would be a little extra trouble to remove it but I don't want it documented in GM's computer that I have the CLB or that I release them from the recall. Besides, I don't mind working on the car.

Mine locked up a few weeks ago. They installed a new lock. Now my plan is to wait for my vin to be included in the recall, get the "fix" and then install the bypass I have sitting in the garage. I know very well this is a crap shoot as the last time I hesitated to install the CLB for a few weeks to wait for Dave Hill's announcement I got the column lock. I don't even want to put the thing on once (as I shouldn't have to if Chevy was doing their job) much less every time I take the car in for work. I wonder how many cheesy plastic parts I'll break trying to get the CLB installed :( .

The only cheesy plastic parts you might break would be the air temperature sensor or the actual instument panel cover itself while trying to flex it back to get the air temperature sensor in.

I have the CLB and think I will wait a year or so to see if the recall spans down to the 1997 models and that people here have not experienced issues with the new motor.

Don't forget that if you clear your DIC codes, the column will unlock.
