I just found out that my car has a K&N air filter installed and it sure needs cleaning! From the web, K&N of course says use their cleaner and oil to service the filter.
Should I get a service kit from K&N or can ordinary soap and water, then some ATF or something be used?
go buy the kit.follow the instructions and you will be ok.the key is after you oil it,let it dry,DON'T oil it and throw it back in.you risk the chance of contaminating the sensor wire in the maf.when i do mine i usually let my filters sit a couple of hours until they dry before i put them back in.
You can cleanit with a strong general psurpose cleaner like simple green.
BUT you need a special oil to re oil it....
So it's easiest to buy the kit. follow the oiling instructions... DO NOY over oil as you can damage your MAF.
I keep the last paper filter I used to put in for 2-3 days while I let my K&N dry... but that may be over kill...
