in the rear carrier on the street regardless of the tire used?

Yep. It's happened to many people. Most common with drag radials. You can get an LPE or DTE hardened output shaft for $250-300. It's worthwhile when you're doing a clutch swap.

I know this was at the track, but read on. I saw someone with a stock Z with stock tires snap one while doing a burnout at the track.

I have buddy here that broke the short shaft of all things with stock tires on his Z--

generally happens either with DRs and a dryhook or a horrible, for a lack of a better word, bounce and not letting out of the throttle. The rearend due to the IRS is sorry to say one of the weaker components of the car.

The hardened output shafts and DTE'e diff strut are worth the investment.
