Bought my Z used, it came with what I now know is a Vararam. Couldn't believe the cheap filter!! I'm a racer and couldn't believe everyone raving about it! Might as well run straight ram air without a filter! Anyway question, can a stock or K&N filter fit in a Vararam housing? I would just as soon have a stock system. Thanks for the info, John
I just purchased the Vararam system last week and installed it on my c5 this past saturday. I beleive that they have made an improvement to the filter. The one I have is a K&N type filter that is also water repellant. I am sure you can purchase the new replacement filter and you will not be disappointed. Charlie
What does the new water repelant filter look like? I just put a Varam VBR-2 on this weekend. In the directions it talked about the foam side of the air filter but mine looked the same on both sides. Is that right?
To answer your question, the stock K&N will not fit. I pulled one out of my vette when I installed the Vararam and the stock filter is actually larger.

I have the same deal. I just got this email from Vararam. I might just take my filter that came with the Vararam out and go to a different product. I am thinking about using a K & N filter and using silicone to stop the leaks.
If your unit has a foam filter it will not accept the Green filter without trimming
The air ducts coming up from the fog lights. We have a “grey” filter that will
Fit your unit without trimming the ducts. Both are similar in performance
And the grey is $49 – the Green is $59 – both with $8 shipping.
Both filters are on backorder due to high Christmas volume but should be
Available some time next week to ship.

The vararam system I installed this weekend came directly from VARARAM. It has the Green K&N cotton type filter. One side had several small notches and the other side was a perfect rectangle without the notches. I installed it like the directions said, but I don't remeber right now if the notches were facing the throttle body or opposite. I'll have to check later.
the so called drop in K&N filter for a Vararam is Part No. 33-2522
It may require a bit of self adhesive weatherstipping to get a tight seal.
Your local autoparts store should be able to order it.... www.theLAPD.com also sells them

Installed mine this weekend also. Put the notches down as I figured the most important end to seal is the intake.
I believe there is a new Green version in production right now, that will fit correctly and increase flow. I just got of the phone with Vararam, as I had one on order for a while, they are switching my order to the new Green version of the filter, but are waiting for production to ramp up to meet demand.
K&N filter #33-2522. You have to trim about 1/8'' off each end. Then siliconed it into the housing. I used rubber bands to hold it to the curve of the housing while it dried overnight. Then a bead of foam weather strip around the inside perimeter. That seals where the two halves of the housing join. The dirt you see was wiped out of my throttle body after 3000 miles. I can live with that
