I just purchased my first Corvette (2003 Z06) and have already discovered the aggrevation the 1st to 4th forced gear shift offers. What exactly is this feature for? Granted this is my first vette but I have been a long time fan and follower. This feature really has me confused, why have a manual shift if you are not allowed at certain times to use all gears in the tranny. I have heard about the override harness and wondered if this really works to eliminate this feature. Any help would be appreciated.
There is a solenoid in the trans that blocks 2nd and 3rd gear if you don't rev 1st passed a certain rpm . I guess GM did it for gas mileage. There is a adapter you can buy from most corvette parts suppliers . All you have to do is to unplug the solenoid on top of the trans and plug the adapter into it . That will disable it.
I actually have one I bought new from WCC and never used it. I wound up buying a Diablo Predator handheld flashtool and it disables CAGS in the tune. With the adapter, you still get the "Skip Shift" light in the dashboard, but you CAN shift. With the tune the light doesn't even come on.
They cost $20.00 + shipping. The Predator is $400.00 give or take.
CAGS engages between 14-19MPH and <25% throttle, IIRC.
My solution was to drive it like a sports car and not worry (aka put my foot into the throttle). I have seen the CAGS light maybe half a dozen times in the time since I've owned mine...
Drive it like you stole it and CAGS won't bother you.
They put them on to help with gas mileage. CAFE sucks, so they have to milk MPG everywhere they can. Dajn thing always comes on at the least convenient time. I'll be getting the eliminator till I get a custom tune. Take it easy
IF you are getting a full tune anytime soon, CAGS is the first to go. The CAGS plug was my 1st mod, did it @ the dealer for an oil change.
Easy to drive thru (more throttle) and just as easy to install the plug, just make sure it is zip tied up so it will not melt onto your H pipe and check it if someone other than your normal, shop touches your car. If the cags short out, it will throw fuse 19 engine1A, and it is fun to trouble shut... hot car, pops fuse, cold no issues. How do I know? Been there done that, but Jeff Creech from CAM came over, helped me out and we found it pretty quick. Every time a shop other than CAM touches my car I have issues grrrr Good luck brother!

Take 1st up to 2 grand on the tach, CAGS won't kick in! (Works for me! )
Hmm, I don't have issues with it.... Even in traffic or parking garages. Just because the light is on does not mean you have to shift.

Unfortunately if you're OLD like me and you aren't paying attention while it happens, you just about break your shifter off before you realize what's going on.
Try being mid turn with some idiot up your a@@ and then find out you can only shift to 4th or slow down to shut the cags light off....very aggrevating.
CAGS=
Now maybe if I had the torque of the LS7 I wouldn't mind so much.

Just out of curiousity, do the C6s have CAGS?
Until you get your CAGS eliminator, just remember that speed is only one of the parameters that the PCM looks at to determine whether or not to activate it. In your situation above, you can always just "blip" the throttle a little and then shift to second. It gets the rpms just high enough to where the light goes off. I'm not saying red-line the thing, just a little throttle "tweak".
When you get your CAGS eliminator installed this little annoyance will be a thing of the past.
HTH,
Robert

Yes, the C6's do , like all the C5's and the ZF gearboxed C4's!!!
Just got my CAGS eliminator "kit" in, can't wait to install it

Installed the eliminator harness today, works perfect. Like posted above one of the best $20 bills I have ever dropped. Thanks for the info and advice.
