Differential VIN numbers?

Differential VIN numbers?
Just had some work done on my car. To make a long story short some rather shady stuff went on 
and I want to verify that they actually did what they said they did.
Are there identification numbers on the differential that I can compare to the VIN on the car that will tell me if they actually changed the diff, and if the put the diff in that they said they did? If so where might I find these numbers and where might I find the secret decoder ring?
I really appreciate the help, so for it's been a less than enjoyable experience!
