Default HVAC gurus inside please !!

Does anybody know what the black vacuum canister behind the pass side fender does exactly ( the one with all the tubing attached ) ?? I know its part of the hvac system . I broke mine and since the hvac does not switch between functions. Is it possible to bypass this piece and still get the hvac system to work ??

Does it have vacuum switching or something inside ?? I temporarily blocked off the broken line but the hvac does not function / switch settings now with that line plugged. Ill definatly pic one up but im really curious what that little guy does thats so critical to the setup.

Without knowing what I'm looking at, if it's a vacuum canister it is usually to allow some volume to "store" up vacuum so there is enough to operate whatever vacuum controls there are, in this case the vacuum actuated dampers in the HVAC system. Without it you would have to wait for the engine to build vacuum to operate the dampers. I had one in my Chevelle just for the power brakes, probably because of the low vacuum due to the cam.
