Default Rear lower control arm removal question

I am in the process of removing the rear lower control arms and am having issues getting access to the top of the lower ball joint stud to insert the allen wrench. Once the half-shaft nut is removed, how do I get access to the top of the ball joint stud? Also, the service manual says to torque the lower shock mounting bolt to 162 lb/ft. That sounds extremely high for a shock mount. Has anyone snapped a bolt using this much torque?

I just got done installing polyurethane bushings all around on my c5 coupe the other day.

I had no problem when I torqued the lower rear shock bolts to 162 foot pounds. The trick I used to get the lower control ball joint loose was to disconnect all of the mounting bolts and tie rod ends to the spindle and then swing around the lower control arm which gave me a better access point. I then took a 7mm hex wrench and cut down the length on the end to allow it to fit in.

Good luck.

Did you have to remove the halfshaft to get at the ball joint stud?

No I did not have to remove the half-shaft to get off the control arm.
First unbolt the lower control arm attachment points, the upper ball joint and the tie rod end.

Then remove the lower shock bolt.

Finallyremove the spring attachment bolt and the two bolts holding on the emergency cable. This will allow you to swing around the control arm to give you better access.

Hope that helps.
