i`ve got a friend at work who`s steering wheel is locked up. its a 2002 model. he came to work last thursday morning, everything o.k. when he got in his car to go home it started fine and he could get it out of park and into gear. thats when he found out that he couldnt turn the wheel. locked straight ahead. its also giving a warning that says, SERVICE COLUMN LOCK. anybody else ever had a problem like this? what could be wrong? he hates to call a rollback to take it to a local dealer who probably has never even sold a vette. the car is in rural tennessee. i own a 90 ZR1 and hang out on the z forum. he asked if i might know what to do. told him i`d type the question on here and hopefully someone might know a quick-fix or whats wrong.....HELP.....thanks in advance for any replies......richard........
Yep try jiggling the wheel and turning the key ect. If sucessful, GET IT FIXED right away before it happens again. sometimes, you can get the coloum cover off and tap on the motor with a small hammer while turning the key ect. may have a dead spot on the motor ect. just like a starter motor when you bang on it with a hammer or a fuel pump when you bang on the tank to get the pump to run.

Here is my understanding of the recall for 6 spd cars, which I have. I got the "Pull Key and wait 10 seconds" message Sunday and read up on the Forum about the column lock problem. I called Corvettes of Houston on Monday and talked to Ricky. He explained that all the recall does for 6 spd cars is reprogram the computer so that it won't run more than 2 mph with the column locked and that the recall does absolutely NOTHING to fix the actual problem. You will have to get the column unlocked by the dealer and then it is just a matter of time before it does it again. Just a vicious circle. I ordered the Column Lock Bypass for mine before it locks up and will ignore the recall just like GM has ignored the real problem.
