Default 408 cam question.....

hey fellas,

What size cams are you 408 guys running?

I'm running this, but I think I reached it's limit. Comp XER grind 242/248 .608/.612 112 lsa

I don't run my car as a daily driver, but I used to and am not afraid of putting miles on it.

I'm interested in something bigger, but don't want to be stalling at the stop light or surging.

TIA

This probably won't help you too much, but I have a G5X3 cam on my 383 that was just finished last week- it has gotten a bit tamer than it was when I had it with stock displacement. So I imagine you could go a bit bigger w/o much problems.

What kind of power are you making with that 408?

Made 465 rwhp/ 445 tq, but i added a FAST intake, LS2 TB, and Bigger 1 7/8 Kooks, no cats and it made 491.77 rwhp/ 486.68 tq. It made 30 to 40 lbs feet more tq across the board, but I'm just not happy w/ the peak hp numbers....thought it would be atleast 500 rwhp, but I think my cam is holding me back.

Stage III T.E.A. heads......(my setup is in my sig)

I'm happy w/ the torque, but was hoping to get over 500 rwhp. Just trying to compare my setup.

I don't know what else I could do except an underdrive pulley, but that will get me what? 10 rwhp?

I'm very confident in my tuner, but how are the road manners for that cam and how does it do w/ nitrous?

TIA

Your cam seems to be a good size but what about your heads? I am running a baby cam in my 402 (226/226 lsa 112 .600 ) with a set of patriot heads and am get 473 rwhp and 489 rwtq. If you go to a bigger cam it won't nesseary help you . You might see better peak HP but will not get you down the track any faster as you would be loosing you low end.

I'm running a 240/248 .608 .612 on a 112 in a 383 ls1 w/ patriot heads. I dyno'd 486 rwhp w/ 5* knock retard. Torque was 458. That's with an ls6 intake and stock throttle body and TPIS Headers.

I know theres room for improvement in mine and I'm sure there's still some room in yours. I'm gonna see that 500 rwhp mark w/ this cam. Since you have way more cubic inches, I don't see why you shouldn't either. Good luck.

BTW I have an underdrive pulley and was told that they make about a 1hp difference. I tried to research this but couldn't find anyone w/ dyno proven results.
