My buddy recently bought an 02 Z06 and the throttle body bypass is on his list of mods to be performed. We are wondering if we can go to napa and get the piece of metal tube and a couple of hose clamps instead of the $20 kit for $2 worth of parts. What size is the metal tube and is there a generic name for it that will mean something to the guy at the parts counter?
Yes... people have been doing this as long as the LSX has been around. Personally I wouldn't wast the time or money because there will be no power gain at all.

it's a mod that does nothing. you would be better off choking yourself. JMO
I think it's a useless mod for performance, but I'm doing it since I am replacing the intake manifold. It makes future swaps easier since you don't have to pry the hoses off the TB. To answer your question, yes. Go spend $2-$3 at the autoparts store and buy a hose connector and a package of caps.
At the speed that the air is moving through the throttle body, how much heat do you think it could actually pick up. The fuel is probably much hotter than the air by the time it travels through the fuel lines.
Don't bother, spend the $20 on an extra bottle of Zaino.

I think the air would pick up some heat. If the air doesn't pick up any heat, why did they run the lines to it in the first place? Wouldn't that be the same principle as the heater - thermal transfer occuring due to blowing air over heater coils? I didn't try this on my Z06 but on my WS6, my throttle body got so hot you couldn't put you hand on it after you turned the car off. With the bypass, it was barely even warm (if that).
I don't think the part about the fuel has anything to do with this equation (cool air + hot fuel is still better than hot air + hot fuel).

the air going in starts off ambient and drops as it gets sucked into the intake.you want cool fuel and cool air [hot fuel vapor locks/hot air causes detonation]the coolant going through the throttle housing keeps the throttle from freezing[not good] when the temps are cold, high humidity, etc.if you live where it gets cold and you drive the car year round, you don't want to by-pass it.JMO
I had no idea that this was such a "sensitive" subject, many of your responses have been entertaining and I thank you for taking the time to repsond.
Back to the original question: I was not asking if this mod would yield a performance gain, I was wondering where to find this part and what size diameter and length the tube needs to be. I think the most offensive thing about this mod is the fact that vendors offer to sell us $2 worth of parts for $20. I choose not to participate in this example of "special corvette pricing".
If someone out there can share some insight as to what and where to buy these parts over the counter it would be helpful to forum members in the future. And maybe this mod won't be considered "worthless" if it only cost $2.
