Im sure you guys answered this to a bunch of vette owners...but my 97 said this a lot and now my 2000 is doing the same thing...Why is this? it is very aggrevating!
it starting doing this last summer to me in my 2000 coupe....then my steering column locked....check the sticky thread at the top of the tech section for solutions to that
Install a column lock bypass. 30 minute job for anyone that can use a torx driver.
as mentioned in the previous post read the column lock sticky at the top of this section.
Corvettes of Houston and Thunder Racing both made good units that cost about $50.
thanks for responses but the column recall was already done and no bypass needed. The stering column is not locking , I just get the error message "pull key and wait 10 secs" It is embarrassing especially if you valet park your car. My key is making good connection to the tumbler and the key itself looks fine...any other suggestions? Thanks
1 more problem..My gas guage is dropping from over a quarter tank to 0 without warning. I park my car with over a quarter tank, I start my car in the am and the check guages light is on telling me I am out of gas...how is this posible with 26k miles on my car?
My Vert had the recall done twice by the previous owner...
I still got the pull key and wait 10 seconds and then a few days later a column lock.
The recall doesn't necessarily fix the problem.
Do you know what the dealer actually did?
There are a number of things they might have done.....
The first attempt is usually just to reflash the prom.
The second step is to program the car to cut off the gas supplyy when the column locks so you can't drive with a locked steering wheel.
The third step is to remove the lock plate ( automatic tranny only) and install a "K harness"
Most of us ignore the recall or if itwas done don't trust it.
When it locks (not if) it will cost you a two and dealer time ( estimate $400)
That's why we all put in a CLB.

Correction! The Column Lock Bypass is still needed, it could still happen even if the recall was done! Thats what I thought too, but I was wrong. I don't ever want that happening, so I'm ordering a CLB very soon. ( My car also has the recall done)
The problem you are refering to - Pull key and wait 10 sec (But no service steering column lock msg) - is discussed in the sticky. If you read closely you will see it is caused by a dirty resistor pellet on your key. Clean it with a little rubbing alcohol and the problem will be gone.
and the gas gauge problem, Mine did that too. Try using Chevron gas with Techron. My gauge problems went away.
You can also try Techron additive sold Checker Auto parts.
I tried the clean key thing and a zillion other suggestions. Rinally had my k harness (A4) taken off and all is well . I should however really get a clb to be covered as best I can..........
