I was just wondering if GM had upgraded any internal parts of the 4L60E transmission from 1997 -2004. My dealership service advisor had told me there had been some new upgrades in the later model A4 s. Truth or BS? Just wondering if anyone out in Corvette land had more info.
It's true. I can't name what parts exactly, but the later 4L65E is stronger.
The 4L65E has more clutches in the 3-4 clutch pak than the earlier 4L60E. I believe it also has a stronger sun shell. I believe the 4L65E was used in the 03-04 C5s.

The 3-4 shift is a band shift (clutch release), not a clutch shift. I think the only clutch shift is the direct clutch shift in this tranny, which is the 2-3 shift. Band shifts are 1-2 and 3-4.

This quote is from a February, 2003, thread reagarding the 4L65E transmission:
"I was browsing the Gm HP website when I found this info :
24221888 4L65-E Automatic Transmission
GM Hydramatic has baked even more technology enhancements into the automatic transmission line up with the new 4L65E. This transmission, the latest creation from GM Hydramatic Motorsports, is a four speed, offering all the latest heavy duty components to stand up to the power of the LS6-405 HP Corvette engines. Upgrades like induction hardened turbine input shafts, larger intermediate servo, an additional three-four clutch plate. All go toward accommodating higher engine power output. The 4L65E offers optimized performance, fuel economy and increase durability. This sate-of-the-art transmission features the latest heavy duty components and high tech-electronic controls. The advanced electronics controlling the LS6 engine also manages the 4L65E shift points, providing unparalleled performance and durability, P/N 24221888 also includes the torque converter. (No core charge required on this transmission)"
I know you have a reputation as a tranny guru, so no argument here, but darn, that just went against everything I have heard, read, and been told! I hadn't heard about another 3-4 clutch, but I had heard that they went to 5 planetary gears, around 2003.
Glad I had mine rebuilt with both 5 planet gears, billet servo, 9 alto reds, and a wider apply band!

I have read the same information you have but it is incorrect. I have had MANY 04 units apart and they are not 4L65E's (5 pinion planets,7 3/4 clutches). Indeed 05-up C6's do have 4L65E's tag ID 5YZD. When GM introduced the 4l65E's it was used only behind the 6.0 (H2,Denali,SS trucks,etc...)and did introduce a new reaction shaft and sunshell (uses a torrington bearing between the two insted of a thrust washer) 5 pinion planetary gear sets(front and rear) and an extra clutch in the 3/4 pack. Now all 02 up 4l60E's did get the reaction shaft and sunshell but NOT the extra clutch and 5 pinion planatary gear sets.FWIW 04 Ls1 GTO's and SSR's do NOT have a 4L65E but the 05's with a LS2 do have (personally been there even though the ID tag is not the conventional ZD letter code). To answer the original question YES the later units have a few better parts than the early C5's. I would love to reveal ALL of the upgraded parts I use but then.......
