Default Headers or cam? But not both.

I am thinking of putting in headers or a new cam. The headers I am thinking about are LG street version with high flow cats. The alternative is a 224/224 or 224/228 cam. It seems that the cost along with installation and tune are very close. Which will give me more power? I have a 99 6spd with a Vararam intake, Corsa cat back and 4.10 gears. Which way should I go and for what reason not go with? At the moment, I can only afford one or the other.

Thanks,

Clayton

Remember that when you do a cam you will also need to upgrade your valve springs and push rods.

Personally, I would keep an eye on the C5 Parts section and pick up a used set of long tube headers on the cheap. I've seen decent setups for as low as $400.

I picked up about the same amount from my headers as I did the cam....see sig for cam specs....I have the TPIS headers...

stock+blackwing + headers+ stingers = 328rwhp +cam = 353rwhp

baseline dyno on stock 99 w MN6 is about 299-301rwhp

headers if I recall cost me at the time ~$700 install was free as I had forum member help

cam install...cam plus all accessories right around $2100

with the exhaust first...it would be a waste of time and money to put in a cam without doing long tubes...you will not get the full potential of the cam...besides, you will need to tune your car after the cam - using stock manifolds will restrict the engines ability to pass more air...if you put on headers first, you can get away with no tune until you get the cam installed...that way the tuner can properly tune the new beast when all of these are done!

I bought a practically new set of Kooks off the forum for $900 including shipping and high flow cats...my next mod is heads and cam...I am running no tune after the headers (it may be running a little rich) but man does it haul a$$!

Thanks everyone,

I think I will be looking for some good used headers and maybe get a friend to help me tackle the project. After reading some DIY posts it does not look that hard. Jest the fear factor of removing parts to get the headers in.

Thanks again,

Clayton

Not trying to be critical, but it looks like it cost you around $3K to gain 50HP? I'd be hoping for a little more than that seeing how the Z06 gains 55 crank HP with intake and cam. Who knows...maybe I'm way off base
