check engine - headlight related?

My check engine light came on yesterday and I noticed today, while fooling around with what it could be, that when I turn my headlights on the check engine light goes off. When I turn them off, the check engine light comes on

. I've been having problems with my foglights lately because they have been coming on and off without me hitting the button. Last night I also noticed that the foglights were on (along with my headlights), yet I had taken the foglight fuse out 2 months ago! I have no idea what is causing all these electrical gremlins. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

did you have a battery leak?

Haven't checked. I've heard that battery leaks are a common cause for electrical problems. However, I don't think I have the original battery (bought the car used) so that might not be the problem. I'll check anyway

Well, it's not the battery.

Any other suggestions?
