On removing a stock front outer tie rod on a C5, After taking off the retaining nut, do you have to unscrew the hex head bolt, is it screwed into the assembly, or do you just use a pickle fork.
If it has to be unscrewed does it unscrew in the normal direction ?
I live in Arkansas and none of the parts stores around here sell a service manual for the C5. That was my first chioce. Thanks for the help!!!
Since you are replacing it just smack the bottom of the threads twards the spindle with a big hammer. The tie rod just has a cone shaped end on it that becomes a compression fitting in the spindle. If you use a pickle fork you will heavily mar up the steering nuckle. Better beating up the part you are replacing instaid of the spindle.
If you are carful you could smack the side of the spindle right ware the tie rod goes through. The shock will cause it to pop up. If not put the nut on so its flush with the end of the threads and hold a piece of thick aluminum or hard wood over the nut and hit the aluminum/wood with a hammer. If you hit the nut directly their is a good chance of messing the threads up.

How about a Tie Rod removal tool. Most good auto parts stores carry a tool like this for tie rod removal. They're good because they don't damage the threads of the tie rod end or the rubber boot...
Ive had both my front and rears off and it only took me 30sec tops to remove them. Never had one get stuck. At the mercedes delership I work at, we NEVER use the tool. It takes way to long and if your not careful you could pinch the boot with it. Howerver it is much better than a pickel fork. My .02
