What cams can I use with stock springs and retainers?
I'm wanting a 224 224 on a 112 or smaller LSA because I want the 'lope'.
Is that OK with stock springs? Does anyone make such a cam or one like that?
What's a good "old days" cam with lots of idle lope that can be used with stock springs.
I don't think anyone makes a cam small enough to use stock LS1 springs. They are just adequate for stock .479 - .500 lift (depending on year.) That being said, you could probably get a cam custom ground with low lift and your desired duration and LSA. However, for that price, you could just buy a cam and springs, and do it right. Just my $0.02 worth.

Sorry, you are wrong. Crane makes several cams that THEY say are ok with stock springs in close to those specs.
I'm curious what is the max cam I can comfortably run and still get a decent "lope".

Wow if you already knew who makes cam for your question, why ask. Dont rip on someone who is trying to help you by saying that they are wrong. dont ask a question if you are goin to be a d*ck about it.
why must you stick with the stock springs?? i hate to see guys choose a small cam for no reason. i know springs are $$$ but def. not worth holding back and getting a smaller cam.
im running a 224/228 581/588 cam on a 113. lopes and makes good power. of course i wish i went bigger, but i got a deal on this cam from a good friend, so i couldnt pass it up!
see your in FL, if your local your more then welcome to check out my car. we have a local shop D&C performance feel free to PM me or chris (D&C Performance) if your interested in having any work done, or if you have any other questions about your future mods!
why get a cam if your only looking at a gain of 20HP, seem like alot of work with not much payput. Pony up some cash get a mild cam, great sound with some good power.

Then maybe you should just call Crane then, rather than shooting down the first guy who responds.
Sounds like he just wanted to pretend he knows about cams.
I say let this guy get a baby cam. Then when he gets a smaller gain then i got just by installing headers then we can all laugh at him.
Now if you want to listen to some advice then i say get yourself some Comp Cam 918 springs and then you can run most cams out there. Which, given youve got a good exhaust already, whould put you in the close to 360-400rwhp range.
If you're going to ask for help then dont be a tool to people offering it. Especially since most of them DO know what they are talking about.
Sorry, didnt mean to sound like a dick, not my intention. I'm a two finger typist so sometimes I might come across a bit short. :o
As far as cams go, I was a motorcycle mechanic for nearly twenty years before I took on my present job so I know a little bit. I've built bike motors that have raced at Daytona.(no winners, but no grenades either)
The technology and theory has grown quite a bit since I've been out of the loop and OHV tech is a bit different than DOHC but I'm trying to learn here.
