When at or near WOT at low speeds, the car will pause very briefly, sometimes squat, rev up very high and take off. While fun, it seems that perhaps the tranny isn’t working too smoothly.
Is it possible it is missing a gear when the throttle is opened up? Is this something that a good tune could straighten out? In the meantime, is this hard on the tranny?
It is a '99 A4 with the performance axle ratio. The car currently has 43,000 miles on it, but the transmission/transaxle assembly was replaced at 25,000 miles while under the care of the previous owner.
The tranny was already replaced, Hummmm. Did the last owner beat the crap out of it? Depending on where you are in speed, the computer will down shift to the safest gear.
I noticed if the car is in D that the tranny does not down shift well at around 40-50 mph. But if I am in 3 (which is regular drive) the tranny will feel better downshifting.
I drive around in 3 until I get up to around 50. Then I switch back to D.
Do you know if the previous owner had a shift kit or a HPP(or like) tune installed to change the shift points?
Not sure if your year has the "competitive driving" button on the console where you can also turn off trac control?? For best results at WOT, use "3" and place in competitive driving mode. The pause that you are feeling is the PCM trying to control torque and trans function to protect the drive train.
