Default Alternator upgrade

I'm thinking of putting and aftermarket auido system in my 98 but im have a problem with finding a more powerful alternator. The one in the car now is not up to it. I went to a shop to get it checked and upgraded but they told me that they could not do anything with it. I did some research and the thing was made in France now i understand why it is s###. Can I get a later year alternator an get it upgraded?

The C5 has to use a specific alternator depending on the year or the DIC will freak out. PM member DTSNGIT. He knows how to upgrade them. I just got a 180 amp chrome one from him.

Unless you're looking to compete with that stereo upgrade, just add a capacitor to the system and save the expense of replacing the alternator. Honestly though, your current alternator will do just fine unless you're adding amps and subs (even then, the only affect to the car will be dimming lights on big bass beats) the cap will compensate for current drain. I'm running a 2000 watt 6-channel amp with a stock alternator and a 1 farad capacitor to handle the bass notes and everything is perfect.

if you have someone that can disable the f gen codes, you can goto a single wire 220amp unit like I did.

There are company's out there selling 220Amp versions, like mine but compatible with the C5's charging system control. pm pdd000, he has the same style alt as me, only able to be comtrolled by the pcm as the stock one is.
