A friend of mine has a 2000 C5. He is having to put in about a quart of oil every month or so lately, which seems really high. He hasn't had any oil show up on his garage floor, so it doesn't appear to be a leak. What would cause this to occur? I have a 1998 Camaro SS, so I'm somewhat familiar with the LS-1 engine, could the PCV system be responsible for that much being burned off? Could it be related to the fact that it is cold out (we are outside of Washington, DC)?
It sounds suspiciously like the oil consumption problem, which occurred with the '00 and '01 models. Ring job, defective factory rings. Good luck. I found a dealer that would fix it under warranty, but others haven't been as lucky. Needless to say, it ain't a cheap fix.
I have an '01 and I had the oil loss problem. You say you add oil about once a month, how many miles is that.
The reason I ask about the miles is because I had my engine rebuilt and GM paid. It seemed the that anything faster than about 750 miles per quart of oil was their benchmark for paying. They figure 1000 miles per quart is still okay.
I was a little scared to have them rebuild the motor rather than replace it but I found a great dealer in Jenkintown, PA and they're service tech is awesome, his name is Steve Spencer. I haven't had a problem since and now I get about 3000 miles to a quart. When Steve was in there he also found two pistons were the ring gaps lined up so that doesn't help with oil loss either.
Thanks for the info. I'll suggest to him to try the PCV first. If that doesn't work we'll try Castrol Syntec. And lastly, if that all fails, we'll pursue the rebuild/warrenty work.
