I DON'T know if the procedure for your '97 is the same as it is for my '01 auto -

For mine '01, you jack the car up and support it, I BELIEVE the shop manual then says put the car in neutral, crawl under the car and look at the drivers side of the tranny - you will see (or at least on my '01 I see) the shift cable where it attaches to the tranny - on the end of the cable right about where it attaches to the tranny, there is a white/cream colored plastic clip - take a regular (flat) screwdriver and pry the side of the clip out - this loosens the clip - NOTE: you are not trying to remove the clip from the cable, only pop the retaining portion of the clip loose

Then I think the manual says move the shifter inside the car until you have the red indicator covering the "N" fully (maybe have someone do this while you are under the car) - when the "N" is fully red, snap the clip back into place, and hopefully when you shift into the different gears, each gear letter (P - R - N - D - 3 - 2 -1) is covered w/ the "red" shift indicator.

Hope this is what you are looking for, hope your '97 procedure is the same as is for my '01, and hope this helped.
