I wonder why GM didn't force the "skip shift" into 3rd instead?
Mechanically it would need to be more complex. Plus, it's more natural to go into 4th if 2nd is blocked out. Being forced into 3rd would really bother most people.
I have a 6 speed and honestly CAGS hardly EVER gets activated. I drive fast, but I not always on it hard. It ONLY comes on if I am barely accelerating.
I thought I would have to get the eliminator right away when I bought the car, but it turns out that it doesn't bother me at all........who knows, maybe it is broken or something. Like I said, the "skip shift" light will come on ONLY if I am Driving Miss Daisy .
If all C5s are like mine, I question why people even bother with the eliminator even if it is an easy install?
So, the question is, when and how does your "skip shift" get activated? All the time under "normal" driving? Or only when you are hardly driving your beast????
Just curious! :D
I'm with you John, this has been a non-issue for me on my car. I stay in 1st until the light goes away when stuck behind slower traffic. The only other time it comes into play is when I am cruising through my apt. complex, but I have found that when the CAGS light comes on and I push the clutch in if I wait for a count of 1 second the light goes out and I can go into 2nd normally, since I'm not moving very fast and there is no load on the engine or tranny there has been no problems delaying the shift. My car is a daily driver and has seen it's share of snarled traffic, just a non-issue for me, plus it's more fun to keep it in 1st at such low speeds anyway. :yesnod:
I see no reason to waste $25 when it does bother me. :yesnod: :yesnod:
It's a question of control. Do you want the government+GM deciding what gear you should be in, or would you rather make that decision yourself? For me, it's not a question of whether it bothers me or comes into play often. It's the fact that if I *want* second gear, I'm gonna get second gear... and *when* I want it. ;)
There are times when I want to shift to second early because I can see by the traffic pattern that about 50-70 mph is where I'm going to need to get on it to merge, etc. I don't want to have to waste gas revving the engine higher when it's unnecessary as in this situation. Also, if you use the gas to keep the 1-4 from getting you, you are only wasting gas if you only need to take off slowly. And if you go ahead and let the thing throw you in 4th, you'll be lugging around in 4th gear at 25 mph and if you need to get on it a little, you'll be in a completely inappropriate gear.
IMO, if you want the car to decide what gear you are in, you're better off with an automatic. That's what they are for.
It doesn't bother me in the vette, because it comes on and is gone so fast. It does bother me in the Camaro though, because it come on later and stays on longer.
In answer to your first question: Yes the CAGS bothers the crap out of me.
In answer to your second question: It is in your owners manual. The CAGS is activiated and the light comes on when: The engine coolant temp is higher than 169 F, you and going 15 to 19 mph, and you are at 21 percent throttle or less. :smash: Hope this helps. :D
CAGS only bothered me until I got it disabled. The daily commute in the wrong traffic is a pain and it's worse with CAGS functioning. For $10-$20, why accept the hassle?
I've driven a lot of cars with crappy manuals so I kind of automatically double clutch when I can't get the gear I want. I don't mean to imply that the C5 has a crappy manual, its just when the CAGS comes up, it feels like a car that won't go into gear, and I automatically double clutch and then it goes into 2nd with no problem. I've heard forum members say that double clutching doesn't work but for some reason it does for me!
So, bottom line, I've never felt it was a problem. :jester
The only time it bothers me is if I am in traffic and the car ahead of me is slower than most and I forget and try shift to second after I get to 15 or before I get to 20 under light throttle. As long as I remember to shift before 15 or use a heavier foot then it never interferes. The once or twice a month it bothers me is not worth $20. If I drove in more traffic it would probably bother me less because I would tend to get better at avoiding it.
