Default Check Engine Light

Check engine light came on last night. Checked for codes and found this one: 10PCM PO442. (I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the check engine light or not.) Tried looking this code up on the code list but its not there. Anyone know what this code could mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Here you go

P0442 OBD Trouble Code
Technical DescriptionEvaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

What does that mean? This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

SymptomsYou likely won't notice any drivability problems.

CausesA code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible SolutionsWith a P0442, the most common repair is to:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Need more help?If you still need help regarding this trouble code, please post your concern in the forums.

Default A bit more info

2002 Chevrolet Corvette OBD-II Codes
The "diagnostic display" mode is entered with the following procedure:

Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine
Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
Press and hold "options"
While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-second period
When first engaged the on-board diagnostics go into an "automatic" mode which shows all parameters: PCM-TCS-RTD-BCM-IPC-radio-HVAC-LDCM-RDCM-SCM-RFA. If there are no problems, you will see "no more codes" on the ICP display. The computer will show two kinds of codes, "current" and "history," designated "C" or "H". A current code indicates a malfunction is present in the system whose module is displaying data. A history code indicates a past problem. When the screen displays "manual diagnostics," select the desired module by pressing the "options" button to go forward or the "trip" button to go back. Press "gages" to go forward or "fuel" to go back. To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press "E/M".

If you want to erase or "clear" codes, press "reset."

I appreciate your help Mowton. If this is indeed the code that caused the check engine light to come on it sure eases my mind some. That is a great description of the trouble code you gave me. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks again.

The only problem is his light will be right back on until he fixes the leak.

You can thank me for posting, but thank Google for finding it

Make sure that cap is on tight. I installed one of those gas bib's. It fits over the threaded section that the cap screws into. The plastic got in the way and prevented the cap from being secured. Took it off, rest the code, no ore problems.

Good luck

Ed

Well I took off my gas cap and put it right back on making sure it was snug. Then I reset my codes. Took her out for a spin and the check engine light stayed off. Hopefully I wont see the check engine light again.

Thanks for the help guys.
