When I started my car this morning there was a loud screaching noise under the hood, it almost sounded like something was scraping something. Then when I turned my car off it did not stop. The ignition was off and I let off the cluch and the car started going like the engine was still running. So I cranked it back up and then turned it back off again and the same thing still happend. ThenI cranked it up and I turned it off again and the noise continued for about 30 seconds and stopped. I cranked again and something does not sound right in the engine with the hood up, but it will stop when I turn the car off now. Has anyone ever heard of this, I am scared to even drive it to the shop. I dont know what it could be, but it was very cold(about 25 degrees) when I started it up this morning. Please Help!
1. cooling fans turn on and possibly one is freezing up? This could explain why the sound continues after you turn off the engine
2. starter not disengaging although you started the car several times so I doubt this is your problem
3. serpintine belt or belt tensioner froze up
4. water pump froze up
5. power steering unit
These are just simple guesses. If it were me, I would carefully inspect my engine bay, check my DIC for any error codes, and finally I'd start it up with the hood up and find out where the sound is coming from.

If by this comment "the ignition was off and I let off the cluch and the car started going like the engine was still running" the OP is saying the car moved with the ignition off, then I'd say the starter had to be engaged.

I am sure it was coming from the engine, I left it running and opened the hood to listen. It sounded like it was coming from right in the middle of the engine. It sounded like it was coming from somewhere right in front of the two covers that say "corvette" on them. I dont know too much about the engine components so I wish I could be more of a help. I have went out and cranked it a few times today and it has not done that since. Somebody told me that it may have been just that i didnt have enough oil pressure because it was cold. I dont know. Hopefully it is nothing

What does this mean. Dont the "H" mean history? If so, does that mean my car is OK?
H means history as in it is/was a previous problem.C means cuurent.I would bet money that your starter was not disengaing. If your car is wanting to move with your foot off the clutch and the engine is off it could only be the starter being engaged. It would also sound like a screetching metal on metal whining sound from the gear on gear action taking place on your flywheel as the engine is running.Check your ignition switch, starter relay, bcm, ect. to find the problem. You will also want to change the starter as it's days are definately numbered from this mis-hap.JER
all your faults are history communication faults.but i do agree with everyone else.sounds like the starter stuck.if you can, look at the flywheel and see if the teeth are all whacked up[chewed],if they are all shiney nd filed like a nail, the starter stuck
something still doesn't make sense. He said he turned off the ignition key, but the car wanted to move...when you turn off the ignition key, the starter is disabled unless the starter solenoid is shorted. Everytime I've had a starter fail to disengage, the engine wouldn't even run in addition to the horrible noise it made. But I wonder if there could be some detonation or dieseling after the key is turned off? It's a great puzzle to solve.
Is there anybody in Jackson, MS that can go take a quick look for C17driver? I think it will be pretty obvious to someone that works on their own vette.
