I did a search and found some info on this subject. However, most of the posts were about the dual-zone climate control. I have manual AC in my 98. Are the troubleshooting techniques the same for both systems?
Here's what I've tried so far:
Pulled battery for a few minutes. Nothing.
I've read that pulling the AC fuses may cause the system to reset and cure the problem. Any method to this procedure?
Lastly, I've heard that a Freon recharge may solve the problem. Is this possible even if the passenger side blows cold?
This car is a "nice day" car, so it doesn't get driven too often.
Any enlightenment on how to go about solving this problem would be appreciated. Thanks!
See if you have a code of B 0367
If so it is the right actuator
If code of B 0363 it is the left actuator
From what I hear is the cost to repair this is totaly outragous.
I have the same problem but I don't have a dealer I can trust here in Daytona to repair this Corvette. The dealer here hires untrained Monkeys to work on cars. I would really like to have it fixed but I have to go to Orlando to get it done.
Thanks for the replies.
If the system is low on Freon, why is the passenger side still blowing nice and cold? Wouldn't the entire system be putting out warmer air?
I'm hoping that it needs is a recharge. That would be nice.
I just don't understand why only half of the system blows cold.
The driver side actuator is not hard to get to. It's underneath where your feet are. You have to take off a panel ( you are lying on your back looking up) and it is to your left. Very easy to get to BUT on the other side it is a living hell. My buddy and I had to use a dremel tool to cut a hole big enough to get it out. Turns out we opened up the actuator on the passenger side and a gear was broken. We fixed it and put it back in and now my passenger side blows cold but not super cold. So im not sure if I have an AC leak or not. But it used to be blazing hot only out of the passenger side.
Yes, low freon will cause warm driver side and cold passenger side. It's bizarre, like a few other things on our beloved Vettes. This leads to another possible situation. If the pressure reading is good or high and you still have the warm/cold issue and no codes, the problem is probably the orifice screen. If that screen gets clogged (and it often does), it creates more head pressure and less efficient cooling. The orifice screen is a $3 part and is easy to get to. It might be worthwile to have the AC shop replace the part. You're going to have to pay for a freon recharge anyway, might as well fork over another $3 and prevent future problems. Have the AC shop recharge by WEIGHT (which I think is 26 oz), not pressure. Hopefully, this will solve your problem.
At this point, I'm considering adding some freon to see if this alleviates the problem. I'm looking at picking up a freon recharge "kit" that has a pressure gauge attached to monitor the charge.
Anyone have any experiences with a kit of this nature?
Thanks.
Had the same problem with my 98. Did all the reset things and finally decided to buy a recharge kit from Pep Boys that had the guage and the R134 mixed with the PAG oil. Figured if the $20 kit didn't work a trip to the dealer would be next. As it stands the fix was $20 and it has been great for the past 6 month. Try the recharge kit.
yeah I though it could be low on freon if it was still cool on the passenger side but not on the drivers. Well it was about a pound low and charging it was all it took. Seems wierd but it will work.
Well, I tried the recharge kit, and it works very well. The A/C blows cold from all the vents now. According to the gauge supplied with the kit, the system was low on freon, so I added about 12oz of R134a.
Its weird when you think about it, but adding recharging the system gets rid of the problem with the vents.
Thanks for everyones help-hope this helps someone else with the same problem.
so you guys are just recharging the freon and that solves the problem? are you guys throwing any codes also or is the only problem the passanger air blowing warm. im not getting any passanger air and now its not blowing cold out both sides.
I just noticed that I had the same problem with mine today. I guess I will charge it tonight if I get the time. Did you put in R-134 by itself or the can with the stop leak and oil in it?

The way evaporator coils work is they are basically just that, a coil or tubing winding back and forth. When the system is properly charged, the whole coil is active, or cold. If the system is low on refrigerant only part of the coil will be active...maybe half, or maybe even less. The part of the coil where the refrigerant first enters is the first part that will get cold, and the only part if it is low. My understanding of the way the Vette's evaporator is arranged is that half of the coil does the driver side and the other half the passenger side, obviously the first part doing the passenger side. So if the system was low, only the passenger side would cool leaving the driver side warm.
