I notice when I crank my Vette first thing in the morning, I have what sounds like a hydraulic lifter that has leaked down. I know this has been batted around on the forum several times. The point is, I have a 1964 Buick Wildcat Convertable that I have driven since high school, 425 cu in, 325 hp . It does the same thing. I have never had any problems with the motor in it. I always give it a little extra time to warm up. I am doing the same thing in the Vette giving it a little more time to warm up before driving it. What do you think? Should I have the Service Department take a look at the Vette or just drive it and see what happens? The sound goes away after letting it warm up a few minutes.
The reason I brought this up is one of the neighbors took a long look at the Vette as I drove away the other morning. I know he heard the engine noise.
Do you get the low oil pressure warning on start up?
I have had problems with low oil pressure on start up and I eventually wacked all the lifters.
there was also a post about 2 weeks ago about a simular noise that sounded like a lifter but it turned out to be some kind of electronic related something, I don't remember.
Your problem sound like that one. go back to the posts about 2-3 weeks. It expalins how to pull the electric connection to test. I think it was posted by someone with an LS1 Trans Am or Camaro.
Someone recently posted that they traced a similar noise as you describe, to the relief valve which bleeds the vapor pressure from the charcoal cannister on start up. So it may be that what you are hearing is a solenoid associated with that action.
I believe it was stated that the valve or solenoid is located on the left side of the engine and that for diagnostic purposes you could unplug the solenoid and see if that stopped the noise. If so you have it nailed. Once you know what it is, it's easier to live with.....even forget about.
Maybe the poster regarding the above will reiterate or you might find it in a post search.
Thanks for the info. I did read the post about the Z-28 and the sound from under the hood. I have never had an oil pressure problem with this car, so I wanted to rehash the situation. You are most likely right about the charcoal cannister and so for now I am going to ignore the problem and see if it gets any worse.
