Can one of you smart folks explain to a "noobie" like me what exactly a stall converter does? And how would changing this from stock versus changing stock gears change the performance of the car? I think I understand, but am not 100% sure.
BTW, I have a 2004 A4 with 2:73 and am looking at swapping gears to 3:42. I don't race or auto X, just want some better performance without the loss of "drive-ability". I'm going to keep the rest of the car stock...except for Z06 Ti exhaust.
everybody has an opinion. Here's mine :
1. What do you intend to DO with the car?? DD, Drag race, Autocross or just ride around looking for Stangs ? You set up different if you're looking at 1/4 mile times as opposed to autocross or 60' times.
2. when you're not "playing" with the car, what kind of driving do you do ? Highway, local, only take it out twice a month to wash it ?
3. if you intend to put LG cam and heads in ( what heads, specs? ) why not consider what the guys at LG might suggest as to gears and TC based on YOUR desired outcome ??
4. Check out TC spec and recommendations by contacting Mike at YANK - get his input, again considering your mods and desired outcome.
I'm not saying the guys here don't know what they're talking about but they don't know what you know - your intended mod specs, driving style, expected outcome, budget, etc.
I think you should talk to people " closer" to you - like the people at LG and maybe go to some vett get together and drive some other cars. If you get to Myrtle Beach you can drive mine.
The guys here know what they like and what made THEIR car feel better. But, $hit, my car feels better to me when I change the oil.
Too be honest I think the happy medium is where you want to be and in this case a 3:42 and 3200 Stall will give you the best of both worlds.
just my .02.

I would put the hi-stall convertor in when you do the diff. It will only cost about a $100 to install as the whole rear end is out. If you wait to do it later by itself it will run $450-500 labor. Good luck on whatever you chose to do.
Were you just told it feels sloopy or have you actually driven a high stall car with 2.73's? Car feels fine and i don't know where people say it's sloppy.
I had a Yank SY3500 with 3.15's, it felt very loose. Once I had 3.73's installed, the car felt much better. Throttle response improved, the amount the car crept in D improved, and the car felt faster all around.

Thanks for the input guys......i Have an appt will LG to bring her in 9 march. I went with 3.73's.....good point on the TC I will talk to LG about it tomorrow.

One thing also to consider if you plan on doing any road racing (20 minute+ runs). People will say different things, but many people advise not to go past 3200. Anything higher is prone to heat issues (even with a tranny cooler.)

Keep in mind that Lou doesn't like autos.
FWIW, given your cam choice, don't undersize your converter and do keep traction in mind. If you want to set it up for drag racing you'll want one type of converter, street racing a different type.
I have had both 3.42s and 3.73 gears in my car. Since you are planning to do H/C at some point you should also be considering a high stall T/C.
I would recommend the Yank SS3600 & 3.73 gears. Your car will drive more like stock with 3.73 gears not to mention better performance. And you will only be spinning 200 RPM more when you're locked up in OD cruising on the highway. If money is an issue 3.42 gears will work fine with the SS3600. If you are really serious about the drag strip go with the Yank SS4000 and 3.73 gears.
