Default check engine light

The check engine light in my 98 Coupe come's on every once in
a while then will go out. I want to see if you guys know whats could be going on. I dont trust my local stealers. I am sure they can hook it up to their computer then rape me. I want to avoid that if i can.

Thanks

The number one cause of check engine lights that makes stealerships a lot of money is loose or faulty gas caps. I always believe in eliminating the simple things first.....

Use the DIC to check the codes being thrown. Post them here and someone will tell you what they mean. Do a search if you need to learn how to display/clear the codes.

Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any present messages by pressing the RESET button. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a history code (something that has occured in the past) but is fine now. Once the computer has finished going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES".

To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps in this paragraph until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules. NOTE !! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this.

I have a ton of codes. I am going to erase them and see what comes back.
The first codes it put up was
0171
0172
0175

Something to do with rich or lean fuel I see.

Hmmmm what do i do?

Default codes 172 &175 means...both banks

..are running too rich ... check/clean/replace intake air filter..PCV valve sticking? replace it...then, if these codes still return...GET IT TUNED.
