Default engine/transaxel question.

Ok C5 guys here is my question. I have this old V8 Corvair. Anyway I was thinking of updating the drivetrain. So can the engine be bolted directly to the transaxel(wish to use automatic) and leave the torque tube out. Any kits, mounts for this?? Thanks!!

Default Don't know

I can't answer your question but that would be one fun Corvair to drive! With that much weight over the rear axle, if it starts to slide, kiss your but good bye I have drive my friend's older 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo and oversteer was ungodly scary but also waaaaaaaaaay fun.

You guys forget why GM discontiued the Corvair! Its uneven front to rear weight ratio, being too heavy in the rear caused the car to over steer and spin out and the driver loose control way too easy. In its time, there where fatal accidents that have accured and GM got sued over it. At that point GM discontinued the Corvair.

A corvair with a V8 in the rear would only be good for a drag car! A Corvair with a V8 in the front w/ a transaxle/rear wheel drive, torque tube and all, now thats a great project!

I guess you don't understand the V8 part. There is a 50/50 balance because the engine is right behind the driver(where the rear seat used to be. Thanks.

Default engine/transaxle question

Back to the original question...I don't know. Being new to the C5, I just don't have the knowledge. From what I do know so far, the layout
of the diff and trans would probably make it too long and put the engine in the front seat with you. A friend has a mid engined Corvair and he uses a Porsche transaxle. I have a DeTomaso Pantera. Mid
mounted engines are cool, not necessarily better. Still, I too would like to know if you could bolt the engine to the trans.

Don't really think so, just looking at the service manual there appears to be no starter pocket in the right side of the transmission case.
So if you wanted it to start..........
