Default 2001 Oil Consumption and Vortech Blower

My 2001 z06 goes through oil at about 1 qt per 1500 miles. I do have the oily residue on the tail pipes and have about 19,000 miles on the car now.Warranty is up.

I just finished installing a Vortech Blower kit over the winter and when I pulled the plugs to put in the new ones they were wet with oil residue as well.

The car seems to run fine and has no lack of power but the oil issue is a bit concerning now that I have the blower on the car. I have yet to get into boost with it yet as its winter in Canada and I only have taken it out on a light drive to make sure I installed the blower correctly and to check for any leaks which was fine.

Do you think the blower will make this issue worse? Is there any real ill effects to this issue if you keep the oil levels in check? I have yet to replace the oil valley cover and its something I will do going forward but I just want to know if this ring seating issue is going to be a major problem going forward or not.

I had asked a Chev mechanic thats a personal friend and he thought that it probably won't be a significant issue other than keeping on top of the oil levels.

Thanks for any help and take care

Drew

Just install a good oil catch can in the PVC breather system. That will help some.

Hey Motley, I noticed your Ontario plate. I'm from Windsor. A good safe tune is going to be the most important issue with your car. We've all heard of the 'ring issue' on some 01's and from what I've read superchargers are inherently hard on the rings. I love the big power FI makes but on my last two vehicles (both Mustangs and vortech supercharged) I experienced oil consumption and blue smoke out the tailpipe after a couple seasons. Hopefully you'll be alright, just make sure the tune is accurate.

Hey bud I aslo own a supercharged Mustang as well and have no oil issues with that car. Mine is a 1993 coupe that I bought brand new in 1993. I actually picked the vette up in Toronto last year. Nice to see someone local

Anyone else have any input ?

Do a compression check and a leakdown test before you buy anything for the car. That'll give you an idea of the overall health of the motor.
BTW, how many k's with the vortech on the Mustang, stock block? It took about 25k before I started noticing symptoms with mine.

Well I have already installed the blower on the vette so I am a little late for that

The mustang has a brand new GT40 Crate motor with brand new SC Trim making 434rwhp on 11lbs of boost. There is about 2800km on both now with zero issues. I do have it dyno tuned and left the timing at 20 dgrees so there is alot left on the table but I'll play it safe ! The car ran 11.63 @ 119.03mph which is great for a blown 302. the car is for know anyone who is interested.

take care

'01's are known for oil consumption issues... it's the rings and the valley cover. You'll want to pull the intake manifold and replace the valley cover with a new one. In some of the '01's the oil/air seperator can unseal and let oil through the PCV system, more than the normal film that gets through. Also, get a good catch can to run in line to catch anything else.

My '01 was re-ringed and doesn't burn any oil now... but that's big money w/o a warranty.

You could also try upgrading to a little thicker oil. I run 5w40 amsoil.

oh...and don't superchargers already create additional oil blow by? I bet it would get worse.

My 01 burnt more oil than that...then I took it to HPDE events and after 3 events, the oil consumption went away. I can only attribute this to the fact that the rings finally seated properly, but only after repeated high RPM abuse for 20 minutes strait 5 times a day for 3 days.

I just meant to check compression and the leakdown before you buy the catch can and other items that were suggested. If those tests come out fine then go ahead and try to do the little things to reduce the oil use.
My LX had the stock bottom, TFS heads, small crower cam, GT-40 Int and about 10psi. It went 10.90@125mph with a c-4 and 3400 stall. Built and tuned by Lidio at Alternative Auto.
How much are you asking for the LX?

From my experience, that doesnt sound like too much oil at all.as one guy said a leak down compression test says everything, but for good performance engine, that sounds good. They perform better a little on the loose side of oil control. That ign.is going to fire well with 4x the consumpion.I whud listen to yr mech.& keep an eye on the dipstick.
