there is no motor in my car and I just put the steering rack back in so it can be steered into the shop.
when I took the rack out the wheels were straight, now when I put the rack back in the wheels are turned toward the right I tried straightening out the wheels with my hands but that didnt work. the steering wheel is locked right now but if I put the key in it and turn it would that be ok? the battery is disconnected also. I just need to get them straight so the tow truck doesnt have any problems when he comes and picks it up.
You need to put the Battery back in the car...The steering wheel (colum lock) is an electric motor..Turn the key to the "ON" position and turn the steering wheel to line up the tie rods.

but why would the wheels be off turned to the right if they were straight to begin with? wont this throw a code?
I need to get this car towed soon so I need to know how to fix it soon.

You should just need to put the battery back on and it should be fine !
from what I've researched on this forum i should turn the key to the on position with the battery hooked up,straighten the tierods with the steering wheel, then unhook the column from the rack and make sure the sensor is reading the right voltage.
can someone clear this up for me what instrument do I use to check the voltage readings?
DUDE! What are you trying to do? Why are you trying to check voltages?
Uh, that would be me
I misunderstood and thought the engine was in the car and he wanted to make sure the steering wheel sensor was aligned and wouldn't throw a code.
Engine out...getting towed...totally different approach. LOL
