I would like to point out that just because a tire will fit on the rim doesn't make it the best choice. Handling wise, pick the tire in the middle of the range. If all you care about is looks, disregard my last.
I've got Nitto 555R's in 305 on my stock 9.5" wheels. They fit ok and don't rub....but the turns can get a little sloppy at high speeds. I got them for traction though...and at the time they were the only 18in drag radial that I could find
Why do you want to go wider? Are you trying to stay stock in an autocross event? Drag racing? Looks?
For racing events I'm getting ready to run 275/305 on stock wagon wheels. Yeah, I know, "the manufacturer does not recommend...", "the traction patch isn't...", etc. I only know what works for me and many others.
For looks? Frankly I'd stick with stock widths, wider just look plumped up like the Michelin Man.
This has been a long discussion on the boards. A wider tire might not result in better traction or better handling. You might suffer with a sidewall that is compromised thus causing handling issues.
I really look at the type of tire I am purchasing versus the size.
that being said I am running Hoosiers at the track all 17inch 275s in the front and 315s in the rear.
On the street and as a wet weather track tire I run Pilot Sport Cups 18in 295s in the front and 315s in the rear.

Wicked post the width of the wheels you are using in these applications when you get time.
I am sort of gathering info on a project car and I like to keep track of this for my future reference.
I basically would like a little wider appearance, I' ll stick with nothing over 295, thanx for the input folks
I think 295's on stock C5 wheels fit very nice. I had 315's on Z06 sizes and they were just a little to far out past the wheel well. I am not sure of my offsets on that wheel though. I have seen pics of 295's on C5 size wheels and they are flush with the wheel well. I think they fit perfect.
275's and 285's look good on the front also. But you may want a little wider wheel than stock for that. A 275 would go on a stock wheel but not an ideal fit.
