I noticed in the last few weeks that my 99's speed tranny is becoming a real pain in the foot to shift. The car is a cam/head........and all the other BS and I frequent the track quite often. I am using a Ripper shifter and I Cartek clutch setup (which works great by the way). I was interested in knowing if anyone else has had problems with this tranny ,and if what I am experiencing could be a "syncro" issue that may be inherent with this tranny or possible an external adjustment issue.
The tranny works great and always shifts but feels a little resistent. I few times at the track I had a hard time grabbing 2nd gear at 6600! We all know how much that sucks.
Hi there,
You said a pain in the foot, and then you said it has a little resistance in shifting????
If you are experiencing a problem with the clutch pedal, and it seems harder to push, you may not have enough lubricant on the clutch slave support cylinder, causing binding.
If it is the shifter, you should perform a shifter adjustment first, before proceeding with diagnostics that may involve tranmissions removal.
Please remember, syncronizers will only have a bearing on your shifts as regards clash, grinding, or inconsistant spindown time of the gears.
Best to you, c4c5
I ment to say "pain in the foot to shift". The pedal feels fine and has full travel. The pedal is high and strong and engages approx. 1 1/2 inches off the floor. When I pull the shifter from 1st to 2nd it seems as if it stop prior to full shift but if I pull a little harder it will go into gear. On the street it's not to much to deal with but at the drag strip at WOT it has kept me from grabbing gears.
Are there any adjustments that might have been interupted when the tranny assembly came out to install the clutch? I noticed that my Ripper shifter has started to get that " rattle" noise that some complain about. Never had it when I installed it.
You could have synchronizer issues but before I hunted with that dog I'd try the fluid change. Also, check you shifter install make sure the plastic biit is till on the end of the shifter.
hehe...pain in the foot....the new forum software replaces wordy-dirties with other words--hence, "pain in the (a with two s's)" becomes "pain in the foot)" automagically. :D
Try a fluid change but most likely you are starting to loose the second or third synchro between 1st and 2nd. My original transmission did this and it got progressively worse. Be wary of pushing or pulling too hard if it hangs up as the shift forks bend very easily.
Got to love technology regarding the "foot to foot conversion!!
I am trying to get my dealer to warranty a new tranny and do it the same time I put the 3.73 gears in it. I guess theres not too much that can go wrong with the linkages to blame it on that. What did you end up doing about your tranny problem?
They rebuilt it the first time. Took 6 weeks. The parts were hard to come by then and no one knew how to do it at the dealership. My dealership in Houston was great and it was not their fault. GM sent a tech to rebuild mine and take a look at the damage. When I got it back it shifted worse and the reverse lock out did not work. I drove it another 6 months and it finally got impossible to drive. :mad By this time the car was out of warranty :cry but since this was a recurring problem I hoped they would fix it. Took it back to the dealer and the service advisor drove it. He agreed that it was screwed. The service manager had to drive it before they went to the regional service rep. I brought it back the next morning. The service manager never made it out of the dealership. The tranny :U right there. I immediately called the Executive office of GM. I didn't even bother with Chevrolet Customer Service. I spoke to some people in the Pres. office and I faxed them the work history on the car. Within 15 minutes the Service Manager at the dealership called and said I would have a new tranny at no cost and that it would be ready that day. Then he asked who I knew at GM because he had been called by the Executive Office of GM for approval on the new tranny before he had even put in the request to Chevrolet plus he had never been called by the Executive Office before.
