Default Drag Radials?

Just wanted some feedback before I purchase a set. I was thinking about running a set Mikey Thompson ET Street 275 40 17 on a set of front Z06 rims. Or is it better to run them on a 18 in rim. I know you gain width but you loose side wall. And you only have a few choices when you go to the 18in rims. Thanks in advance.

Sidewall is much more important than width. Stay with the 17s or get some 16s for your DRs. If you are using on the street too, know they last about 1-2K miles only.

I will only be running them to and from the track. But thanks for the info. I figured you would not get much tread wear out of them.

The tire you mentioned above has great traction and I would mount them on a 17' front rim and match the rims. That's all u need.

WHAT?? Are you talking ET streets, or ET Street Radials?? My Camaro ran constant low 11s and I got a hair below 10k miles on the Radials. On a set of 255/55/16s. It was my only car/daily driver at the time too. Then I switched to the 275/55/15 when I got my welds, and those had 6k miles on them before I sold them. The other day I talked to the guy, and he said hes added about 2k miles on them, and they are getting low, but he guesses about another 1k before he replaces them.

Also, yes sidewall is good, But if you want the best of both worlds. MT is coming out with a 305/45/18 for the 2006 season. They are 29s, and have ALOT of side wall. I currently am running the 305/45/18s in a Nitto 555R, and this is just temporary until the 18inch MT Radial is released.

Not the best pic, but thats a good amount of sidewall if you ask me, Almost 5inchs on top, and bottom.Yes i know I need to lower the front.....

Not counting the 2006 models that are not available yet, No they do not make a 315, for 2006, yes they will.

For the 2005 list, the only 315 they have is in a 15.

255/50/16 is the biggest 16 and 275/40/17 is the only 17 for 05. BUT a 275 MT has alot bigger contact patch than a Nitto 555R. Without looking at comparison charts, I believe a 275 MT has the same contact patch as a 295 Nitto.

Hoosier has some DOT drag radials, that are supposed to hook better than a MT Radial, BUT the Hoosier Radial has No V groove for water. They just have 3, 1/4 inch rings around the tire. Similar to a MT ET Street, but the circular grooves on a ET street are like a razor cut, and the hoosier is about 1/4 wide. Hoosier does make a 335/35/17 in their Radial. But its only a 25.5 inch tire on a 17. So thats too small for my set up, Id reather have the 29inch tire.

I have not called MT in about 3 weeks, so im unsure if they have announced a release date yet for all their new sizes. They said they have a huge list of 17s and 18s coming out for 06. That was when I asked about the 305/45/18, and they said yes, its on the list, but no annouced date, other than 06 Season. I dont know about you guys, but our track opens in like 2 weeks.

You are the first person I have ever heard of to get that kind of mileage, all others get 1-2K out of them, so I am not sure how you are doing it. Oh and just FYI, the 305/45 does not fit on all cars, many members report rubbing issues.

uhhmm..i highly doubt someone would buy a set of tires if they only lasted 1-2K miles! that insane!!! my Nitto 555 DR lasted for about 8K miles, and that was with many burnouts and track use. not to mention, it was a daily driven car. if driven nicely, they should last for 10K miles.

i don't know where your gettin ur info that they only last 1-2K miles...however ur gettin that from obviously does not know crap. Perhaps a few dozen burnouts??? constant strip usage...who knows...

The only time Ive heard of low mileage was on daily driven cars with a full spool rearend. 1-2k miles would of only lasted about 2 weeks on my camaro. I put a hair over 20k miles on it in the 11 months I owned it. And about a month after I bought it, I put the MTs on it, and about 4 months before I sold it, I replaced the 255/16s with the 275/15s.

For the 2005 season, I have almost 50 time slips, and was the 2005 street tire points champ for 05 at Gateway. I dont have the slips seperated to know when I switched from the 16s to the 15s. So I cant really give an idea of how many passes where on each tire. I also do alot of street racing.

The only mod to fit the 305/45/18s on mine was removal of the inner fender wells. I then sprayed the inner fender with a rubberized coating to reduce the road noise.

No, if you know anything about real drag tires you know they wear FAST under normal driving conditions. Nittos are CRAP compared to the M/Ts for hooking, so to compare the mileage of a Nitto to a M/T is crazy. The only reason to buy a Nitto over a M/T is mileage. So, thanks for the useless post.

Yea, thats the thing with me, I dont care how long they last as long as they hook, once the first set lasted longer than I expected, I now love them.

Wow dude, settle down!!!
im not saying im a "know it all" for drag radials, but what kind of drag radial only lasts for 1-2K miles...why would someone spend $500+ on that? it just doesn't make sense... i mean, my car has some serious hp, yet i was able to get some decent mileage out of the nittos... i didn't buy them, they came on the car, but like kolk1 said, they didn't make 305/315 till recently.... the MT is also what i would like to go with, but only in the larger size... the 275's just ain't cuttin it...my next set is BFG DR in 315. they will hook better then the nittos, but won't last as long. im fine with 6K + miles, but not only 1-2K... it just don't make sense...
and after im done with the BFG's, i'll go to MT, assuming the 315's are out by then...

They only last that mileage becasue they are "street legal", not made for the street. 2K miles street=a ton of drag runs. You give up longevity for traction, you can't have both. I went with the Nittos for this reason and will get cheater slicks for street class when I am at the strip. I wish the M/Ts would last, but everyone I have talked to, including MT and Summit who are both about 10-15 min from me say otherwise.

I made a poll on the local LS1 board, and even my buddy with a 9 sec Camaro, that he drives alot on the street, He said he got over 8k miles on his ET Streets. And all of the other members are saying 6-9k miles on theirs, before they where bald.

Im perfectly happy with dead hooking a 175shot out of the hole on 275s MT Radials, and getting almost 10k of use on my Camaro. At my price they were only 125 a piece, so 250$ for almost 10k miles, and dead hooking is well worth it in my opinion. Thats why I cant wait for the 305/45/18s that are coming out for the 06 season, I cant stand Nittos.

Are those street miles @ 25MPH? I think that may be a reason for the higher mileage. Using them on the highway at all is another story.

With Nittos, I've gotten almost 10k miles out of them. BFG's, probably half, if not less. E.T. Streets probably would have lasted just as long as the BFG's, or even longer, but I didn't drive them on the street often enough.

Ok guys had my first run on a set of BFG Drag radials on a set of 18" wagon wheels and I ran my best 1/8 mile time of 8.97 on my first pass. My buddy was kind enough to let me use his at the track for a few runs. I am definalty ready for the m/t that are on order. I will let you know how I do when I get them on. I decided to go with the m/t 275 45 17 on my front Z06 wheels. I am getting them for $395.00 mounted and balenced. Let me know if that is a fair price. Thanks for everyones input.
