I put on some non-runflats on my 99FRC. It has the factory chrome rims and everything seemed great. Now I am getting a slow air leak from one of the front tires. The tire store that put them on had trouble finding the leak. The finally said that the chrome was peeling off of the inside of the rim and that was causing the leak. They tried to put some sealer on it but it is still loosing about 1psi every couple of days.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is getting the rim re-chromed the only solution?
I have chrome wheels, no problems here. I don't understand how a little flaking could cause that, unless there is some wheel damage. I would probably try another place if possible.
Thanks for the replys. I almost laughed when they told me that, but then I started thinking that I was wrong, since I have no experience with chrome rims. Before they took the tire off the rim they said it might have picked up some debris between the rim and the tire. Since I have never gone rock climbing in it I was all set to argue with them.
I think I will just try another shop.
I've had it happen to me. The chrome wasn't peeling per se but the rim was corroding. The rim were old and apparently the moisture condensation will slowing due them in. They took a wire wheel to the area then applied a thin coat of sealer and it worked. It made me want to avoid chrome wheels after that.
The guy at Discount Tire said he has seen it a number of times.
There is a little seal in the inside of the tire pressure monitors. My originals were almost like small hard plastic rings that were flat and one was leaking. I bought 4 new o-rings (can remember the size, although #9 sounds familiar) from home depot for about 2 bucks. When I had new wheels put on, I had them change out the seals and now the tires hold air perfectly
Also, I didnt think GM offered chrome wheels on the corvette...only polished...although they may have a clear coat on them which is peeling.

Strangely enough, on my '99 FRC I have the EXACT same problem! The tire store said the same thing and showed the peeling to me as well. They said it was a common problem. I'm now looking at some aftermarket rims just to be done with it. I really don't like the chrome wagon wheels that much anywho. However, I will definitely do waht Stealthy4 recommended and replace those gaskets.
