I sprung a leak between the trans and differential, maybe also a slight leak at the input from the driveshaft. Can someone point me to a thread explaining how to fix this. The car is a 98 6spd.
Also, can someone give me an approximate amount I should pay to have this job done.
And, can someone let me know what it would cost to do this myself, I know the seals are cheap, and my labor is free, but how much for tools and what do I need?
both common problems . had left axle cover leek gm has updated parts for that problem .output shaft oil seal p/n 88996703, and the new differential side cover O-ring,p/n 89047953.both available at gmpartsdirect.com. good luck.
This is not an easy job to do. The side half shaft is easier and can be done on jacks, but the rear diff removal is best done on a lift (some have done it on jackstands though). You have to remove the exhaust and rear carrier. I'd recommend you get the GM manual and a few friends to help you out.
Does anyone know where I can order the GM manual? And does anyone know what special tools I'll need? I figure if the price for the tools is less than the labor to get it fixed by GM...I have all the time in the world to get it done.
I caved...car is at the dealer. My wife wouldn't let me "destroy" the rearend of the car in my garage. Probably best. I need to go to mechanic school. I think it would pay off more than my college education. hehe
