Default HUD not working

I have a pre-owned '99 with the HUD which doesn't appear to be working. Have C5 owners been having chronic problems with the HUD's or have they been mostly reliable? Any suggestions on what to check before taking it to the dealer? For those who have had problems, were the repairs costly?

Thanks for any guidance.

Interestingly, in the 3.5 yrs I've been on this forum, I've never read of anyone with a HUD problem. Just the usual "all characters lit up" phenomenon caused by the sun.

I guess you can say they've proven to be quite reliable.

By "not working", could you be more specific? You can't see the display?

Yes, I cannot see the display. There is no display at all. It is not a sunlight issue.

Thank you for you response.

This will probably sound too elementary, but by chance is the HUD brightness slide control on the left of the dash turned all the way down?

If not, try sliding it back and forth quickly a few times ...it is possible this dimmer control is going bad (or is bad). The only fuses I could find for the HUD circuit would take lots of other stuff out too, so it's likely not that.

Otherwise, the likely culprits I see would be the dimmer switch or the projector itself, the actual wiring to it isn't that complex. If you have a meter, can troubleshoot electrical circuits, and can remove the cluster, I could provide a wiring schematic for the HUD.

If that's out of your league, then a visit to the dealer might be your best bet.

Y2KVERT4ME,

Thank you for your feedback. The problem WAS elementary, I'm embarrassed to say.

I had to shift the image. At my height with my seat position, I couldn't see the image. Once I shifted it downward it came into view.

For whatever reason I was thinking many of these HUD's were burning out over time. Your comments made me look into it some more.

Take care.
